Mental Health & Incarceration

There is no clear divide between mental health challenges and the criminal justice system—71% of individuals with mental health issues have had contact with law enforcement. Sheriff Dart has even called Cook County Jail the largest mental health institution in America.

Among our clients, over 79% report experiencing mental health challenges stemming from trauma, Post Incarceration Syndrome (PICS), or disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or anxiety. These issues often co-occur with autism, developmental delays, and other cognitive challenges.

Despite the need, only 49% of our clients with mental health challenges are currently seeing a provider. Many rely on Medicaid (45% of our clients), which makes accessing already-overburdened mental health services in Illinois particularly difficult.

After an initial assessment, clients are paired with a peer support specialist, caseworker, or invited to join a support group. More complex psychological needs are referred to our contracted social workers or partnered clinical agencies. Hinda provides both direct referrals and ongoing support, ensuring services remain accessible and sensitive to the unique needs of justice-impacted individuals.
