Families: The Collateral Damage of Crime
To schedule your own documentary presentation, please email [email protected], or call at 708-990-7849, for further information.
Most incarcerated people are men, leaving behind wives, mothers, and children. These families become the innocent, forgotten victims—or “collateral damage”—of crime. The women in particular face psychological hardship, financial stress, and social stigma due to a loved one’s incarceration.
These families exist throughout our Jewish community. Hinda CARES offers emotional, financial, and psychological support to families—mostly women and children—affected by the incarceration of a relative. In partnership with a professional team of filmmakers, we created a documentary that poignantly tells the stories of families ostracized by our own community because of a loved one’s imprisonment.
We have screened our film, accompanied by presenters, to over 15 groups—sparking important conversations, creating sensitivity, and encouraging support. It’s true, though hard to believe: these women and children are shunned, through no fault of their own. We’ve heard their stories. We’ve felt their pain.
